The 8th Principle started as a grassroots movement to insure that addressing racism and other oppressions in ourselves, in our church, and in the world is more than just talk. To live up to our values of being an anti-racist, anti-oppressive church, we are asked to take action and hold ourselves accountable. What does the 8th Principle say?
“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”
The 8th Principle Task Force has been formed to introduce West Shore to a denomination-wide effort to reestablish our religion’s move towards racial equity & beloved community. Members include Susan Ballard, Victoria Carter, Dorothy Faller, Brian Gardner, Mary Jo Maish, Linda New, and Meghan Ross.
From February-May 2022, we will engage the congregation in dialogue about how the 8th Principle can aid us in our search for justice, equity, and compassion in human relations. We hope congregants will participate with open minds and hearts as we search for truth and meaning.
